Mirror Mirror on the wall …

Who is the fairest of them all?

Makeup Mirror

My boyfriend often jokes about the number of mirrors that I would have up in our home, given the chance!  And when he jokes, it’s not at the potential lack of mirrors, it’s about the vast number of mirrors that I would hang, given half the chance!  I can hear you guys thinking “how vain of her to surround herself with images of herself, constantly” and I don’t blame you for thinking that… but that’s not why I’d hang them

This article that I wanted to write today isn’t about why I would choose to hang mirrors on most walls in my house (because they bounce light around every wall and give each room much more depth, thus giving the appearance of greater space), it’s because my boyfriend’s comment reminded me of the importance of mirrors as part of my job.  Then I got to start wondering whether most people actually think about the importance and usefulness of mirrors as an everyday part of their life, to maintain their chosen image

As a makeup artist, I am often asked how I manage to maintain my makeup throughout the day.  A lot of women put “their face on” first thing in the morning and then don’t touch it at any point thereafter, throughout the rest of the day.  Which is fine if that’s their choice.  But then don’t be surprised that by 530pm it’s not looking like it did at 8am that morning!  I have no magic answer or solution for those people.  But I do have some practical advice… if you would like your makeup to stay fresh throughout the day then you need to maintain some level of “checks” throughout the day on your face!  You choose the frequency of those checks and might wish to do them once at lunch time after you have eaten, or every time you nip to the toilet during the day.  You can give yourself a quick check at your desk (if appropriate) to check that your breakfast isn’t sitting between your two front teeth still!

Marilyn Monroe

This leads me onto the relevance of this article … Your makeup mirror.  Aside from the makeup in your makeup bag, what else would you class as a makeup bag essential?  Would you think of your mirror as a key ingredient to your makeup bag, or do you think of it as something that facilitates your makeup application?  I reckon that most women would say that the makeup mirror is one of her daily essentials!  In fact, I don’t think that I’d find any of you guys  who does not have a makeup mirror handy in your purse, pocket or wherever you stash it

For those of you who drive, how about your car?  Do you use the 5 mirrors in the front of your car to carry out your own makeup checks!?  (Obviously when you are NOT driving)

Your mirror is your best friend… and the sole purpose of your makeup mirror is to make possible, your application of makeup (and to carry out checks!). Part of this reason is because the makeup mirror is just about the most convenient tool for this endeavour!  This is especially true because the makeup mirror is very handy, and can be kept inside the smallest pocket ever perceived.  I always keep one in the very front pocket of my handbag, which must only be 10cm x 10cm, but I know it’s ALWAYS in there, should I be caught short!

But if you didn’t have your mirror nearby, would you attempt your makeup without it…. “Mirror-LESS”?   There is no rule that says one cannot apply makeup on her face without the use of the makeup mirror…  In fact, any woman has the ability to apply makeup without having to use a mirror but it takes confidence, practice, knowing your face and knowing your products.  Still, using it definitely makes the act a whole lot easier, right!  Despite its size, that little makeup mirror can give any woman a clear and vivid picture of her face so that she can make her applications with confidence!

Makeup Mirror

What’s more, makeup mirrors allow you to correct your mistakes too… On the move and immediately! You can point out the bit of lunch that your friend still has in their teeth J and show them proof, right there and then!

And if you don’t have your glasses to hand but need a little help with magnification, then your makeup mirror suddenly becomes your best friend again…you can opt for a 12x zoom!  Some mirrors offer up to 12 times magnification for your viewing pleasure!  Designed solely to work for YOU.  So maybe if you haven’t already thought about buying a makeup mirror, you should.  And if you hadn’t considered the possibility of getting a magnified one, then you should!

Stay on top of your makeup

Hey there!

How is everyone?  Sorry I haven’t been on here for a couple of weeks, but I have been keeping my facebook page (click here to check it out) daily with all sorts of hair and makeup and beauty goodies, which I hope that you have enjoyed!

Don’t forget to keep an eye on my Facebook and Twitter pages as I keep them topical when I am on the move, AND when I am filming. I’ve just finished Holby City again for a couple of weeks so I am back to “normal” hours just at the moment!  I did the hair and makeup at a wonderful wedding at the weekend so the start of May has been pretty awesome so far!

I wanted to chat quite generally today about makeup … and makeup ideas that are all about helping you to define your own personal beauty

The power of makeup

We seem to have embraced a fast paced life style nowadays, right – I don’t know about you guys, but I certainly have.  I’m always on the go and am fighting for every minute I can grab to keep on top of things… work, home and my personal grooming!   I am re-assured though by the amount of women that still manage to make time to make themselves look beautiful!

Is it enough to say that it’s their inner beauty that exudes when they are doing what they love to do??  Or is it because of modern makeup that enhances their natural beauty?  And the fact that it is so readily available is amazing, right!?

With so many makeup tips and ideas at their fingertips, on the internet, professional beauty experts are getting their voices heard EVERYWHERE!  By you all reading this blog is a PERFECT example of just that! So it’s no wonder that women look vigorously young and gorgeous!

There are so many commercial products displayed everywhere and the market has continued to grow and explode with the online availability of products and information.   It’s very easy to get swamped by all the information though… information overload is pretty common, right!  I’m a massive believer in being careful to remember though that all these makeup ideas, products and regimes should be used to enhance what you already have.  In order for YOU to really shine, you have to think about your personal style … your unique way of expressing yourself.  That might mean being understated, or that might mean being overstated.  Whatever is the real YOU, let your face speak… and use your makeup to enhance that

You can enhance your beauty and push it to the edge and you can push your limits if you choose to.  Maximise it with confidence.   Extend your own beauty or go wild with makeup… it’s there for YOUR taking

Everyone has their own unique skin type, pores, shapes, textures etc  but you will find that you should fit loosely into one or more ‘industry category’, and if you need help or inspiration, the Industry will help you to plan a look based on your set ideals along with your own personal physical specifics.  That’s why you select the best style that fits the real you… your natural beauty, a simple pretty face, a classic look, a playful look, a glamorous look, or a seasonal look.  Whatever it is… own it!

Rhianna

Makeup designs, ideas, tips and tricks are released daily, everywhere around the world, to help you to adapt your daily routine and activities.  Celebrity styles are changing almost daily too, but you can keep track of what’s happening no matter where you are!  Whether you are going to work or a party, or a friend’s house, to the supermarket, or to a special event, it is so easy to prepare yourself and your face in advance because you have information and resources at your fingertips.  You just have to put them into action.  Once you get used to it you will no longer struggle on how you want to look… because you already know what your look will be

Try it.  Run with some of the beauty tips and makeup advice that I have put up in my blog over the past few months.  Check out my Facebook page daily for inspirational ideas.  Every week I stick to the same structure for my content, so you know what to expect from me.  For example if LIPS are your thing, then you’ll know that every Tuesday is dedicated to LIPS!   If Nails are your thing, then you’ll know that every Thursday is about Nails. Combine this with other information that you have read and learned.  Then work on it… Be open to suggestions and new ideas and let it help you define your beauty

Have a wonderful week everyone and thank you for taking the time to read this

LIP Tips

Check out the best Lip TIPS

Tuesdays are now all about your LIPS so make sure you check out Makeup Like A Pro on Facebook and check in on here for all my tips and tricks on keeping your lips fresh…

“Know thy balms” ! Look for hydrating ingredients like beeswax, shea butter, vitamin E and almond, jojoba or coconut oils

For extra KISSABLE lips… Take a water bottle with you wherever you go. Drinking enough water (the equivalent of at least 9 cups of fluids daily) will keep the body, skin and lips hydrated

Apply your lipstick well and you shouldn’t need many touch-ups during the day. Try regularly exfoliating your lips and keeping them moisturised – this will help to create a smooth finish

Whether you’re using a lip brush or applying straight from the stick, “apply an even layer over the entire lip, starting at one corner of the mouth, and keeping within the natural lines of the lips.” Bobbi Brown

“Always apply the colour to the corners on both top and bottom lips. Then fill in the bottom lip and any missed areas before pressing your lips together to evenly distribute the colour.” Bobbi Brown

Blot your lips on a piece of tissue to soak up excess product and help to set the stain

Makeup Tips for Blue, Green and Brown Eyes

Engaging YOUR Eyes

Get the most out of your Eye Makeup and check out the tips below for your weekend Eye Makeup look… if you need a recap on the importance of Colour then check it out here

Makeup tips for Blue Eyes

A little re-cap on the importance of the colour wheel when it comes to picking colour for your eye makeup – remind yourself by checking out the link http://www.makeuplikeapro.info/?s=Colour+wheel&submit=Search

For Blue eyes … they really pop when played up with black or chocolate brown liner and thick black mascara, thanks to the dark/light contrast. Rich shimmery eye shadows have the same effect. Shimmery taupe eye shadow has a light-reflecting finish that opens up the eyes and the complementary brown undertones make the blue pop — from dark brown to taupe and champagne

And of course, with blue, you can always turn to cool shades of grays and blues, like Yves Saint Laurent Ombres Duolumieres Eye Shadow Duo in 5 Blue Legend – Grey Illusion. The mini palette includes shadow and liner brushes for an abundance of application options

However, be careful with very light, almost gray, eyes. Dark shades can easily overwhelm and minimize light eye colors. A soft grey, or silver won’t overshadow your eyes’ natural beauty

Makeup for Brown Eyes

Brown eyes are neutral, so you can wear pretty much any color. But to really make them pop, go for a contrast. Pale champagne shadow makes dark brown eyes stand out. Line the inside of your lower lash line with a cream pencil, like Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner in 102 Béryl to enhance the effect. Love the soft tip and convenient sharpener on the other end

For a more dramatic look, create a charcoal grey smoky eye using Illamasqua Powder Eye Shadow in Incubus. The dark grey shadow enhances any darker specks in brown eyes, making them look richer and deeper. This shadow has a matte finish so color doesn’t crease on lids

Any bold hue, such as mint or a bright purple like Benefit Velvet Eyeshadow in Fancy Pancy also offers sharp contrast to browns

Makeup tips for Green Eyes

Any shade of green — whether it’s mint, hunter or emerald — will make green or hazel eyes pop. Champagne, chocolate brown and olive green are great for a subtle green smoky eye if you add highlights around the brow bone

Since purple and green are opposites on the color wheel, they look extra vibrant when paired together. Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in 83 Illusoire a subtle purple, has a gel texture that allows it to be worn as a shadow or liner

For a subtler contrast, try a sheer lavender shadow, like Burberry Sheer Eye Shadow in Lavender

The Oscars Makeup

The Oscars Makeup is “Transformation Thursday”

I read this article today and wanted to share it with you guys, as it’s a little different to the normal “Transformation Thursday” that I delve into… It’s more about the skill of all the Oscar Hot Topic makeup for films which is why it caught my eye

I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have

As two oversized Oscar statues peered out at the capacity crowd from opposite ends of the Samuel Goldwyn Theater stage in Beverly Hills, one thing was obvious the Saturday before the 2013 Academy Awards: Make-up and hairstyling were the stars of the afternoon.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences celebrated make-up and hairstyling with an exclusive event dedicated to the Oscar nominees in the newly retitled Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling category.

This year’s honorees were Howard Berger, Peter Montagna and Martin Samuel for Hitchcock; Lisa Westcott and Julie Dartnell for Les Misérables; and Peter Swords King, Rick Findlater and Tami Lane for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Officially titled “Oscar Celebrates the Year in Makeup and Hairstyling,” the sold-out event included fans of make-up and hair artistry as well as many industry professionals, including Bill Corso, Michele Burke, Michael Westmore, Greg Cannom, Yolanda Toussieng, Deborah LaMia Denaver, Steve LaPorte and Trefor Proud.

“This is a wonderful time for these eight nominees to bask in their accomplishments and recognition,” said Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch Governor Leonard Engelman during his opening remarks as moderator. “Some of you in the audience may have contributed to these films and should be sharing in their glory. Today is a celebration of winners. Every nominee who steps onstage is a winner.”

Each of the nominees took the stage where Engelman, accompanied by a photo slide show, led a discussion about the process. A 10-minute video clip selection capped each presentation

‘Les Misérables’ Westcott and Dartnell described creating a beard for Hugh Jackman that was strong enough to survive multiple waves of water, creating prosthetic teeth with just the right shade of downtrodden Parisian yellow and what the duo described as the “Les Misérables haircuts.”

The decision to shear Anne Hathaway’s hair was made before Westcott joined the production, and she admitted she wasn’t completely on board with that choice. But both she and Dartnell said there was no hesitation about giving Hugh Jackman’s hair the look Jean Valjean needed as a prison inmate.

“We just went for it,” said Dartnell “Hugh had seen the concept drawing, and he was all for it. You have to be brave and go in and do what we had to do … We said to Hugh, ‘Just go out and buy a good hat,'” said Dartnell.

Westcott and Dartnell appeared to have the most fun with Helena Bonham Carter’s character Madame Thénardier. When Engelman began to ask, “This was an opportunity to …” Westcott quickly finished the sentence with, “Show off.”

For the Hitchcock segment, Berger, Montagna and Samuel were joined by the film’s director, Sacha Gervasi. He brought up how the original make-up was a little too close to home.

“They did a make-up where Tony Hopkins looked exactly liked Alfred Hitchcock,” said Gervasi. “It was wonderful, except nobody knew it was Tony Hopkins. I could have been doing it. So we tried to find a balance. Howard calls it a portrait. We weren’t really doing an impersonation, we were trying to do Tony’s version of Hitch.”

All praised the actor for his dedication to the character. “Tony would not leave the room until he was 100 percent,” said Berger. “He didn’t want to break the illusion. He didn’t want to come to set without the fat suit on. That’s the big reason I feel it was a success.” (AT RIGHT: Berger, Montagna and Samuel)

Gervasi said the make-up brought out Hopkins’ devilish side. “He took delight in going up to people as Hitchcock, especially those who hadn’t seen him, tapping them on the shoulder and going ‘Good evening.’ People would jump,” he remembered. “When Helen Mirren actually saw him for the first time, she went, ‘What the bleep?’ She was genuinely shocked.”

For The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Swords King, Findlater and Lane were joined on stage by actor Graham McTavish who played Dwalin. He detailed his character’s complicated make-up as “a silicone cap, a foam cap and a piece for the nose and the bridge,” which took more than an hour to apply.

One of the biggest challenges for the team was taking slim actors who averaged more than six feet in height and transforming them into believable dwarfs.

“We had to squash them and widen them,” said Swords King (NEAR LEFT, with Lane and Findlater). “What we tried to do with the make-up was lose their necks. We tried to widen them [the actors] with hair.”

“We had to accentuate some of the features to create this illusion,” continued Lane. “We enlarged their heads and widened their ear spans, broadened their foreheads and enlarged their noses to create this squattish look.”

“We actually lowered their ears as well, so they were nearer their shoulders,” added Findlater.

Findlater said that every actor and most of the extras had to be wigged. Many characters had facial hair. And then there were those whose arms, legs and feet were also in make-up. “We literally had walls and walls, rooms and rooms of wigs, beards, eyebrows,” he said. “It was an incredible sight to see.”

Following the main event, which featured a question-and-answer session, the crowd adjourned to the lobby for a reception featuring displays of key make-up and hair materials from the films

“It’s just great seeing all these people that are really into the art of make-up,” said Montagna. “You don’t realize that there are so many fans out there who love it. I know when I was starting out, I’d give anything to be at an event like this. To be on the other end of it is really exciting.”

“I had no idea we’d have this big of a turnout,” said Lane before pausing to sign a program for a young fan. “I’m really impressed at how many people care about the intricacies of what we do. It’s a great event and a great evening.”

In fact, all the nominees were kept busy throughout the evening autographing programs, photos and whatever admirers put in front of them. “I’ve never done this before in my life,” exclaimed Dartnell as another fan approached. “I could get quite used to this.”

Makeup Tips

Makeup TIP Tuesday

As it’s the post – Oscars week this week, it only seemed right to give a couple of Red Carpet Tips to you all today

How can you make sure your lipstick lasts all night?

Use a lip liner. The liner acts as an anchor to the lipstick so it adheres and has a clean finish. Using a bit of face primer on the lips can work too and helps to ensure the wear of your color

How do you create your own Red Carpet looks at home?

The best way to recreate the looks from the red carpet into an everyday look is by picking one feature of the look and making it more simple. This helps tone the look down so it isn’t too much at once

Where’s the Rosey Apple of your cheeks?

Smile into the mirror and where the area of your cheeks becomes roundest… that’s your apple

Blend blend blend !!!

Make sure that you blend your blusher into your foundation really well, otherwise on mature skin, this will add unnecessary years to your face

Tap tap tap

When using a powder blusher, load up your brush with colour and ALWAYS tap the brush lightly before applying the colour to your face to knock away any excess pigment … otherwise you risk loading your cheeks with too much strong colour

What are your daily tricks?

Share them with us via Facebook below
