Makeup News from NY Fashion Week

This is a great behind the scenes interview with Fashion Makeup Artist James Vincent – Fantastic Product and Technique tips and tricks … great article James

James Vincent NY Fashion Ween

James is responsible for the beautiful looks showcased at the International Makeup show, runways around the world and celebs like Lady Gaga and Jane Fonda just to name a few

Q: Can you tell us more about the trends that inspired you for the Ashton Michael Runway?

A: The theme of the collection was “Black Art” so I wanted depth and intensity while keeping it minimal. One of the easiest way to get this was using OCC lip tars because they are so intense in color.

Q: Did you do any highlighting and contouring on the models? If so what products did you use?

A: Yes, I focused on contouring with no highlighting for a more natural look. I used Kevin Aucoin Sculpting powder to achieve this look.

Q: What are your top  go-to beauty products?

(1) Kevin Aucoin skin enhancer foundation, which is versatile. You can get sheer coverage from it or build for a full coverage look.

(2) Lip tars are super versatile. You can use them on the eyes, lips and cheeks.

(3) Nars Multiples blush which gives you the right kiss of color to your cheeks.

Photo Credit: Kraseybeauty.com, NARS multiples at Sephora $39

Q: When watching some of your tutorials you speak a lot about how to achieve a great eyebrow. What do you think about the new eyebrow epidemic that’s taking over these beautiful faces?

A: The brows now are more full and fluffier but I do see that people are placing more attention on the eyebrows. You must know your product that you’re using and stay away from the ‘makeup counter’ eyebrow. We don’t see those on the runways so you must try to keep your brows looking modern in a sense.

Q: What is your favorite eyebrow product to use?

A: Anastasia’s brow point, which is great for sketching in your brow and individual hairs.

James keyed the show “Boy Meets Girl” by Stacey Igel as well. We got to see a new fun look from James that he created with fun colors.

Q: What was your goal with executing the makeup for “Boy Meets Girl”?

A: I wanted it to be fun and flirty with a pop of color, which reflects Stacey Igel.

Q: What is your favorite red lipstick?

A:  Well, I love ‘Lady Danger’ and ‘Ruby Woo’ by MAC. I also love Stalker by OCC but I grew up on red colored lipsticks from Revlon, which can do the job as well.

Photo credit: drugstore.com, Revlon Really Red lipstick can be found for under $8 uyour local drug  store.

(Everything Girls Love)

I can “high five” his red lippie choices as MAC Ruby Woo and Lady Danger are a staple kit “must have” for me too.  Great lippies which I would definately recommend for long lasting vibrant colour middle of the road price lipsticks

What’s your favourite Red lipstick?  Have you found one or are you on the contstant look out to find THE red?  Tell us below on Facebook!

Valentines Day Makeup Tutorial Dita Von Teese

Learn how to do a Sexy Demure / Vampire Makeup

Dita Von Teese

For this look, think Dita Von Teese Burlesque …

Sultry and sexy and simply sophisticated

This is what you will need:

Liquid Eyeliner
Brow Definer
Light Eyeshadow
Mascara and / or false lashes
Red lipliner
Red Lipstick
Blusher
Contour Powder

Sexy Demure

To start this makeup you need to apply a lighter base than you would normally choose but make sure that you blend it into your neck !

Sexy Demure
Sexy Demure
Sexy Demure
Sexy Demure

Next, apply your lighter shade eyeshadow over your entire lids upto your socket line

If you feel confident, apply a little socket line shading to add definition which you will see I have done very lightly in the photos

Next, taking your liquid eyeliner, pull your eyelid upwards and outwards to stretch out the skin on your eyelid.  This will give you greater control when drawing your eyeline.  Then starting from the middle of your eye, draw a line upwards and outwards to the shape that you want

Complete your the other eye to match

TIP!  Keep some cotton buds handy and wet the end with water if you make a misteake.  Avoid using an oily makeup remover as this will affect your ability to re-apply the liner

Next, apply your mascara or false lashes

Define your brows.  If you are dark haired, you will be able to go darker than I have with your brows to match your hair colour but beware all you blonde haired beauties as you will start to look like you have comedy brows if you go too dark!

Next, apply your lip liner and then your chosen red lippie

Sexy Demure

Lastly, apply your blusher and contour shading.  Apply your blusher last because the amount that you put on will be affected by your red lipstick!

Don’t forget your beauty spot if you fancy wearing one!

Voila!

Try this beautiful and sexy makeup for your sweet Valentines Days :)

Let me know how you get on

Beyonce at the Super Bowl

Super Bowl or Beyonce Bowl!?

Beyonce at the Superbowl

Have you all seen photos of Beyonce at The Super Bowl performing with Destinys Child yesterday?

Her appearance was a SHOW-STOPPING success!  OMG that girl has got it all … style, moves, the lot!

Did you all see her Hair and Makeup

Stunning foundation and use of highlighters on her forehead and under her eyes (as normal, to give her that famous Dewy highlighted look) a natural gloss stain on her lips, brows to DIE for and a gold smokey eye to match her nails.  Oh and don’t foget contouring!

Simply follow my steps for a 30 second Smokey Eye then Try MAC Old Gold Pigment or MAC Gold Lemon Pigment … and simply mix with MAC mixing medium to create a line of solid gold and apply generously across your top lash line

VOILA!  Beyonce Super Bowl here you come!!

Beyonce Makeup at the Superbowl

And those NAILS …!?

She sported nailes that were FIT for her Super Bowl Superstardom!  Together with those fierce leather gloves … BOOM!  Think the Glam-Sporty look really worked.  You might not have nailed her dance moves down yet but you sure as hell can replicate those nails!  Minx Nail design … go on ladies … you know you wanna!   She went for the straight-up Gold and Matte Gold Chevron Minx on her own digits

Beyonce Nails Superbowl

… Oh yeah …  And those backing dancers nails!

Celebrity nail stylist Lisa Logan tells US weekly how touched town and says “As soon as I arrived at he hotel, I began working on creating super long nail tips covered with the Gold and Matte Gold Chevron Minx that would be worn by the backup dancers.  The process was very time consuming because the nails were going to be used in the holographic segment where it looks like Beyonce has multiple arms, so all the dancers had to be wearing the same design. And, because the nails were so long, I needed to use two Minx templates to cover each tip.”   Thanks for your tips Lisa!

Are you going to re-create your own Beyonce look??

The Secrets of Hollywood Glamour

Hey again

I’ve been chatting to a  lot of people on various forums this morning about Makeup and Beauty and Hair and anything like that really that I love and am passionate about!  And someone asked a really great question about Hollywood actresses of the past – the sort of 1940’s , 40’s, 50’s and 60’s eras.  The point to her forum question what that she was suprised that the Hollywood actresses of the day looked so much younger than they actually were and she wanted to know of any tips / tricks / trade secrets that they would have / might have used to create their Hollywood Glamour and maintain their Hollywood youth!

Because it was such an interesting question, I thought that I would share my response that I gave her, with you

I hope that you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing about it

Marilyn Monroe Hollywood Glamour

Hiya

Making someone look a certain way on camera is often the result of a number of processes / procedures / steps but very often it makes use of some very basic principles of makeup application and techniqus

The relationship between light and dark for instance will affect the face in a number of ways.  Contouring (which is a common makeup technique used on camera to enhance / create definition) uses the basic principle of light – to make something stand out / be highlighted and dark – to make something recede.  You can create the notion of youth and the notion of age by using dark and light in the correct areas of the face – eyes, cheeks, jowls, frown lines … think of all the areas that are prominent on an older face and work out what you need to do to either enhance (to age someone) or reduce (to make youthful – which is often harder and a more complicated process)

Vivien Leigh Hollywood Glamour
Vivien Leigh

Socket line shading outwards and upwards for instance created space to open the eye up by creating a silhouette of shape.  Creating an arch in your brow will open up your eyes too.  Careful application of eye makeup to an “older” skin can really work wonders at seemingly turning the clock back

Greta Garbo Hollywood Glamour
Greta Garbo

Can I  suggest that you simplify your makeup bag and have a little experiment with a few products when you have a spare hour or so – take a light powder or foundation and a dark powder and try some shading and highlighting on your face.  Check out my Makeup Like A Pro Blog article on how to contour like Kim Kardashian http://makeuplikeapro.info/how-to-do-contouring-makeup-like-kim-kardashian/  – this will give you some great beginner tips on where you can create light and where you can create dark

Ava Gardner Hollywood Glamour
Ava Gardner

Movie Stars will use a combination of amazing natural good looks and careful makeup application to create a certain image – Did you know that Mariyln Monroe wore 5 varieties of lipsticks and glosses all at the same time to create that iconic pout? darker reds were used on the outer corners, lighter shades were worn in the middle to offer up added dimension, and she highlighted her cupid’s bow and bottom lip.  All this was based around the notion and relationship between light and dark

Hope that helps :)

Film Effects and Beauty Makeup – which one?

What is a Beauty (aesthetic) Makeup? And what is Effects (prosthetic) makeup?

Morning everybody – how was your weekend?  Fun I hope?!

Smokey Eye

Mine was great.  I had a full glam evening out on Friday night (Ill tell you about the products I used later but here’s a little pic attached) and a chilled out rest of the weekend ready for a busy week ahead!

As it’s Monday, I thought that I’d start the week with a new topic… I thought that I’d talk about the cross over between High-street Makeup and Film Makeup because it’s 2 areas that I am fully involved with on a day to day basis!  I know that a lot of my friends get confused with some of the words that I use to describe the different makeups so I thought that it might make a nice Monday morning read for you all to check out the difference between 2 major makeup areas

As we all know I’m sure, Makeup goes further than making you look good on the outside.  I truly believe that if you embrace its power then it can help you to feel more positive on the inside too.  In terms of positivity, it’s about having added confidence in knowing that you look and feel great.  Looking presentable is just an obvious advantage.  Makeup is a very powerful tool as it can considerably change the way that you look.  Not all makeup will work to enhance your natural features and add beauty.  Aaesthetic makeup, aka beauty makeup will help you to do this, and prosthetic makeup, aka special effects makeup, uses a different approach.  Take a look at the photo of Ric Baker below for example

Makeup Artist Ric Baker
Rick Baker

If you don’t have any beauty makeup and want to buy some then get yourself down to a department store and start testing out some colours and products.  Take a packet of tissues with you too so you can wipe off colours and start again!  Don’t be afraid to use the back of your hand as a pallet too.  When you think of beauty makeup, you are familiar with lipstick, foundation, blusher, mascara, eye shadow… all of the products which are readily available to you – even in some of the major Clothes Stores now

On Thursday last week I talked about Movie Makeup Transformations.  Check out my article if you haven’t already as it will introduce you to some of the most recent Movie Makeups that have involved some form of transformation to take the actor to the character he/she will be playing.  This process often will involve some level of Prosthetic makeup application, which is usually known as “Effects makeup”.  Take a look at some movies, TV shows and theatre shows to get a treat for your eyes in some prosthetic makeup examples – they truly are works of art.  So, it is often applied to create a special / particular / chosen “effect” … not a term you should be using when looking to build up your beauty makeup dialogue!  Sculpting, moulding and casting techniques are used to create advanced cosmetic effects.  Some of the desired effects for the person wearing the makeup might be to age, grow, change shape or even change species through the clever and skilled application of prosthetic makeup techniques.  For instance, the character Mystique in X-Men

Rebecca Romijn as Mistique in X-Men

There is more cross over between aesthetic makeup and prosthetic makeup in terms of products used but less of a cross over in the products used to create prosthetic effects and those used to create a beauty makeup!  It might seem obvious but it’s useful to know the terminology and some differences between the two

So if you want that celebrity glowing look everywhere you go, like Megan Fox, don’t miss a trick… take your lippie but girls, make sure that you leave at home your sculpting kit! :)

How to do a 5 Minute Makeup

My 5 Minute Makeup

Morning everyone!  How was your weekend?  Fab I hope!  Mine weekend was quite relaxing this weekend – I finished filming a week or so ago (check out the IMdb link to the film as it’s going to be another of Dame Judi’s finest performances) so I have been really busy with my blog and doing some more videos for you all!  Very exciting couple of weeks coming up!

Are you ready to find out how I did my 5 minute makeup!?

Today I’ll be telling you all about what I used to create my 5 minute makeup that I started to tell you about on Friday.  It’s really simple and as I said then, all you need is some confidence, a makeup bag that you know and a bit of practice :)

Pre-Step 1 is: Before I start putting my makeup on, I had already prepped my face with moisturisor and sometimes primer (depends how tired I am as I personally find that normally I am ok without primer but it helps my makeup stay on for longer if I am really tired!)

These are my steps … I rarely deviate away from the order below coz it’s kind of like a military operation now and I’ve got the timings down to a T :)

  1. Yves Saint Laurent Teint Radiance  foundation –
    Yves Saint Laurent foundation

I pump 2 pea sized amounts onto the back of my left hand and apply to my nose, chin and mouth area with the tips of my 2nd and 3rd fingers of my right hand.  Because I only apply foundation to the areas of my face that need a little bit of coverage (nose, under eye and chin) I blend the rest of it outwards towards my ears – there is hardly any remaining at this point to cover my cheeks which is the way I like it as by doing it this way, it gives a natural finish, yet offers coverage in the required areas
    1 minute

  2. Y
    YSL Touche Eclat

ves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat – With one click of the “pen”, I have enough on the applicator for one sweep under both eyes.  I then gently pat it in, concentrating mainly on the inside corner of my eyes – I tend not to apply it to the outside corner of the underneath of my eyes
    30 seconds

  3. MAC Eyeshadow in Sketch

MAC eyeshadow in Sketch – With my large blending brush I apply a small amount of this (it’s dark brown with a tiny hint of Red) into my socket line and blend it upwards and outwards – its a broad brush stroak to add a small amount of depth and contouring to my eye – it’s by no means a “full on” smokey eyes
    30 seconds

  4. L'oreal Volume Millions Mascara

L’oreal Volume Million Lashes in Extra Black – I am very generous with the amount of Mascara that I like to apply as I like a full impact set of lashes!  I apply one coat to each eye and move onto step 5
    45 seconds

  5. Saint Tropez Bronzer Powder

Saint Tropez Powder Bronzer – I load up my bronzing brush with a generous amount of bronzer and tap off any excess.  I then start from the outside of my neck (right side) and work in circular motions, moving upwards towards my chin each time, and around my neck from the left to the right.  When there is less bronzer remaining on the brush, I work in circular motions around my face starting on my right side moving anticlockwise.  Dont forget to work the colour into your temples and hairline!
    About 1 minute

  6. I move back to step 4 and apply another coat of mascara – by coming back to it, it allows the first coat to dry ever so slightly, which makes the second layer build up much better!
    This takes about 45 seconds
  7. MAC Pink Swoon

MAC powder Blusher in Pink Swoon – I smile into the mrror, load the colour into my brush and apply the blusher in circluar motions to the Apples of my cheeks
    15 seconds

  8. Lime Lilly Eyebrow pencil in Taupe

Lime Lily – Waterproof Defining Eyebrow pencil in Taupe – I allow myself about 20 seconds per eye and apply this pencil in short strokes starting from the inside corner of my brow, following the shape that I want to create, to the arch then down the other side to finish at a pointThis takes about 45 seconds

Total running time 5 1/2 minutes

What about my lips!?  To be honest with you, for this makeup, I don’t put anything on my lips, apart from some Balm if they are feeling dry and I would do that on the run to save precious time!

So make sure that you stay tuned for my YouTube video coming very soon where I will SHOW you how I do each step so that you can go away, practice and perfect YOUR 5 minute makeup :)

Introduction to a 5 minute Makeup

So its TRANSFORMATION THURSDAY again and today is an introduction to YOUR 5 minute makeup

If you guys know me and have watched my 30 second smokey eye YouTube video then you’ll know that I like to do EVERYTHING well but some things I like to do well AND FAST!  My Lucy Friend speed demon has been lying dormant since i was a baby… my family would definately agree with that! Doing my own makeup quickly has come about for a number of reasons – I started playing with makeup very early on so I was already training my hand, eye, face coordination (unknowingly) from a very early age! Then as I got older I didn’t stop!

Girl putting her mums lippie on

I don’t think that since the age of 16 a day has gone past where I haven’t used at least one piece of makeup in any 24 hour period. Whether that’s lipgloss, eyeliner, blusher, moisturiser… I’ll use it at least once a day!  That’s not because I was insecure or felt I needed it to do it to make myself feel better.  I simply LOVED playing and experimenting with it all and I realised that taking the time to do it  to myself became my sort of ritual.  Aside from the benefits I was getting from making myself look as good as I could, I was taking 5 minutes every day to focus purely on myself and the benefit that I get from that is HUGE – I still feel it now when I do my makeup every day.  Do you guys feel the same?So by default, the speed at which I was applying makeup on myself was increasing and increasing! then when I started doing it on friends, I got quicker on them too!

But where am I going with this, you might wonder?  That’s what prompted me to start my makeup YouTube tutorials with My 30 SECOND SMOKEY EYE!  It’s to prove to you that you don’t need hours to get a good makeup look done – which is great news as most of the time you don’t have hours to spare, right?! But as long as you have the right tools at your disposal you can achieve ANYTHING.  A lot of it is in the organisation of it and that becomes second nature the more you practice!

Even if you don’t believe me right now, you gotta TRUST ME :)

That prompted me to write to you all today. There are 2 pictures below – a “before” and an “after” … The one on the LEFT is the “before” by the way… :)

5 Minute Makeup before and after photos

That very natural makeup took me no longer than 5 minutes to do.  5 minutes?!?!  Did you think it would have taken longer or shorter amount of time?  Do you instantly think that there’s no way you could do a makeup in 5 minutes? If so then STEP ONE is changing the way you feel about it because it’s ENTIRELY possible.  All you need is confidence and practice, and a makeup bag that you KNOW.  By that  i mean using products that you know how to use – ones that you know how they will go onto your skin

Now, if you’re all honest with yourselves, I think you can safely say that you could all make 5 minutes in the morning for yourself. Right? This is aimed at people who want to wear makeup by the way…It’s for those of you who want to wear it but are either too nervous to try different things or lack confidence and belief in your own abilities or you might just want to see another way to do what you already do by someone different!  Whatever your reasons for reading this and wanting to get better / faster / more confident / whatever it is you are seeking … IT’S BRILLIANT that you are doing something about it

I’m here to show you that you can STOP thinking those negative thoughts and by watching what I do, and by having a few KEY makeup products in your makeup bag… You’re makeup routine life will transform!

Check back in over the weekend where I will reveal what I used and how I used it and I will give you plenty of tips on what you can be doing to make your life easier

Keep an eye out too as Ill be sharing how to do the 5 minute makeup on YouTube

Thanks for taking the time to stop by and read
See you all tomorrow
