Mirror Mirror on the wall …

Who is the fairest of them all?

Makeup Mirror

My boyfriend often jokes about the number of mirrors that I would have up in our home, given the chance!  And when he jokes, it’s not at the potential lack of mirrors, it’s about the vast number of mirrors that I would hang, given half the chance!  I can hear you guys thinking “how vain of her to surround herself with images of herself, constantly” and I don’t blame you for thinking that… but that’s not why I’d hang them

This article that I wanted to write today isn’t about why I would choose to hang mirrors on most walls in my house (because they bounce light around every wall and give each room much more depth, thus giving the appearance of greater space), it’s because my boyfriend’s comment reminded me of the importance of mirrors as part of my job.  Then I got to start wondering whether most people actually think about the importance and usefulness of mirrors as an everyday part of their life, to maintain their chosen image

As a makeup artist, I am often asked how I manage to maintain my makeup throughout the day.  A lot of women put “their face on” first thing in the morning and then don’t touch it at any point thereafter, throughout the rest of the day.  Which is fine if that’s their choice.  But then don’t be surprised that by 530pm it’s not looking like it did at 8am that morning!  I have no magic answer or solution for those people.  But I do have some practical advice… if you would like your makeup to stay fresh throughout the day then you need to maintain some level of “checks” throughout the day on your face!  You choose the frequency of those checks and might wish to do them once at lunch time after you have eaten, or every time you nip to the toilet during the day.  You can give yourself a quick check at your desk (if appropriate) to check that your breakfast isn’t sitting between your two front teeth still!

Marilyn Monroe

This leads me onto the relevance of this article … Your makeup mirror.  Aside from the makeup in your makeup bag, what else would you class as a makeup bag essential?  Would you think of your mirror as a key ingredient to your makeup bag, or do you think of it as something that facilitates your makeup application?  I reckon that most women would say that the makeup mirror is one of her daily essentials!  In fact, I don’t think that I’d find any of you guys  who does not have a makeup mirror handy in your purse, pocket or wherever you stash it

For those of you who drive, how about your car?  Do you use the 5 mirrors in the front of your car to carry out your own makeup checks!?  (Obviously when you are NOT driving)

Your mirror is your best friend… and the sole purpose of your makeup mirror is to make possible, your application of makeup (and to carry out checks!). Part of this reason is because the makeup mirror is just about the most convenient tool for this endeavour!  This is especially true because the makeup mirror is very handy, and can be kept inside the smallest pocket ever perceived.  I always keep one in the very front pocket of my handbag, which must only be 10cm x 10cm, but I know it’s ALWAYS in there, should I be caught short!

But if you didn’t have your mirror nearby, would you attempt your makeup without it…. “Mirror-LESS”?   There is no rule that says one cannot apply makeup on her face without the use of the makeup mirror…  In fact, any woman has the ability to apply makeup without having to use a mirror but it takes confidence, practice, knowing your face and knowing your products.  Still, using it definitely makes the act a whole lot easier, right!  Despite its size, that little makeup mirror can give any woman a clear and vivid picture of her face so that she can make her applications with confidence!

Makeup Mirror

What’s more, makeup mirrors allow you to correct your mistakes too… On the move and immediately! You can point out the bit of lunch that your friend still has in their teeth J and show them proof, right there and then!

And if you don’t have your glasses to hand but need a little help with magnification, then your makeup mirror suddenly becomes your best friend again…you can opt for a 12x zoom!  Some mirrors offer up to 12 times magnification for your viewing pleasure!  Designed solely to work for YOU.  So maybe if you haven’t already thought about buying a makeup mirror, you should.  And if you hadn’t considered the possibility of getting a magnified one, then you should!

Stay on top of your makeup

Hey there!

How is everyone?  Sorry I haven’t been on here for a couple of weeks, but I have been keeping my facebook page (click here to check it out) daily with all sorts of hair and makeup and beauty goodies, which I hope that you have enjoyed!

Don’t forget to keep an eye on my Facebook and Twitter pages as I keep them topical when I am on the move, AND when I am filming. I’ve just finished Holby City again for a couple of weeks so I am back to “normal” hours just at the moment!  I did the hair and makeup at a wonderful wedding at the weekend so the start of May has been pretty awesome so far!

I wanted to chat quite generally today about makeup … and makeup ideas that are all about helping you to define your own personal beauty

The power of makeup

We seem to have embraced a fast paced life style nowadays, right – I don’t know about you guys, but I certainly have.  I’m always on the go and am fighting for every minute I can grab to keep on top of things… work, home and my personal grooming!   I am re-assured though by the amount of women that still manage to make time to make themselves look beautiful!

Is it enough to say that it’s their inner beauty that exudes when they are doing what they love to do??  Or is it because of modern makeup that enhances their natural beauty?  And the fact that it is so readily available is amazing, right!?

With so many makeup tips and ideas at their fingertips, on the internet, professional beauty experts are getting their voices heard EVERYWHERE!  By you all reading this blog is a PERFECT example of just that! So it’s no wonder that women look vigorously young and gorgeous!

There are so many commercial products displayed everywhere and the market has continued to grow and explode with the online availability of products and information.   It’s very easy to get swamped by all the information though… information overload is pretty common, right!  I’m a massive believer in being careful to remember though that all these makeup ideas, products and regimes should be used to enhance what you already have.  In order for YOU to really shine, you have to think about your personal style … your unique way of expressing yourself.  That might mean being understated, or that might mean being overstated.  Whatever is the real YOU, let your face speak… and use your makeup to enhance that

You can enhance your beauty and push it to the edge and you can push your limits if you choose to.  Maximise it with confidence.   Extend your own beauty or go wild with makeup… it’s there for YOUR taking

Everyone has their own unique skin type, pores, shapes, textures etc  but you will find that you should fit loosely into one or more ‘industry category’, and if you need help or inspiration, the Industry will help you to plan a look based on your set ideals along with your own personal physical specifics.  That’s why you select the best style that fits the real you… your natural beauty, a simple pretty face, a classic look, a playful look, a glamorous look, or a seasonal look.  Whatever it is… own it!

Rhianna

Makeup designs, ideas, tips and tricks are released daily, everywhere around the world, to help you to adapt your daily routine and activities.  Celebrity styles are changing almost daily too, but you can keep track of what’s happening no matter where you are!  Whether you are going to work or a party, or a friend’s house, to the supermarket, or to a special event, it is so easy to prepare yourself and your face in advance because you have information and resources at your fingertips.  You just have to put them into action.  Once you get used to it you will no longer struggle on how you want to look… because you already know what your look will be

Try it.  Run with some of the beauty tips and makeup advice that I have put up in my blog over the past few months.  Check out my Facebook page daily for inspirational ideas.  Every week I stick to the same structure for my content, so you know what to expect from me.  For example if LIPS are your thing, then you’ll know that every Tuesday is dedicated to LIPS!   If Nails are your thing, then you’ll know that every Thursday is about Nails. Combine this with other information that you have read and learned.  Then work on it… Be open to suggestions and new ideas and let it help you define your beauty

Have a wonderful week everyone and thank you for taking the time to read this

Makeup News from NY Fashion Week

This is a great behind the scenes interview with Fashion Makeup Artist James Vincent – Fantastic Product and Technique tips and tricks … great article James

James Vincent NY Fashion Ween

James is responsible for the beautiful looks showcased at the International Makeup show, runways around the world and celebs like Lady Gaga and Jane Fonda just to name a few

Q: Can you tell us more about the trends that inspired you for the Ashton Michael Runway?

A: The theme of the collection was “Black Art” so I wanted depth and intensity while keeping it minimal. One of the easiest way to get this was using OCC lip tars because they are so intense in color.

Q: Did you do any highlighting and contouring on the models? If so what products did you use?

A: Yes, I focused on contouring with no highlighting for a more natural look. I used Kevin Aucoin Sculpting powder to achieve this look.

Q: What are your top  go-to beauty products?

(1) Kevin Aucoin skin enhancer foundation, which is versatile. You can get sheer coverage from it or build for a full coverage look.

(2) Lip tars are super versatile. You can use them on the eyes, lips and cheeks.

(3) Nars Multiples blush which gives you the right kiss of color to your cheeks.

Photo Credit: Kraseybeauty.com, NARS multiples at Sephora $39

Q: When watching some of your tutorials you speak a lot about how to achieve a great eyebrow. What do you think about the new eyebrow epidemic that’s taking over these beautiful faces?

A: The brows now are more full and fluffier but I do see that people are placing more attention on the eyebrows. You must know your product that you’re using and stay away from the ‘makeup counter’ eyebrow. We don’t see those on the runways so you must try to keep your brows looking modern in a sense.

Q: What is your favorite eyebrow product to use?

A: Anastasia’s brow point, which is great for sketching in your brow and individual hairs.

James keyed the show “Boy Meets Girl” by Stacey Igel as well. We got to see a new fun look from James that he created with fun colors.

Q: What was your goal with executing the makeup for “Boy Meets Girl”?

A: I wanted it to be fun and flirty with a pop of color, which reflects Stacey Igel.

Q: What is your favorite red lipstick?

A:  Well, I love ‘Lady Danger’ and ‘Ruby Woo’ by MAC. I also love Stalker by OCC but I grew up on red colored lipsticks from Revlon, which can do the job as well.

Photo credit: drugstore.com, Revlon Really Red lipstick can be found for under $8 uyour local drug  store.

(Everything Girls Love)

I can “high five” his red lippie choices as MAC Ruby Woo and Lady Danger are a staple kit “must have” for me too.  Great lippies which I would definately recommend for long lasting vibrant colour middle of the road price lipsticks

What’s your favourite Red lipstick?  Have you found one or are you on the contstant look out to find THE red?  Tell us below on Facebook!

Makeup kit for the Morning After

The Best Makeup Kit for the Morning After

I saw this article today and thought of you guys :)  Or maybe it’s because I’ve had such a busy week that it caught my attention more than it normally would!?  Among the great ironies of female life is that the days when you have the time and energy to apply expert makeup are the days you need it least!  You went to bed at a reasonable hour the night before and you wake up well-rested and calm. You performed all three steps of your skin regimen and have no blemishes …

So the days when you wake up late, exhausted, and panicked, are the days when you most desperately need makeup – right!  On those days, women face a second irony: foundation, powder, and concealer — the most urgent makeup, the kind you need most after a late night at a place where you don’t have a toothbrush – are hugely inconvenient.  They are messy (check out my article with tips on how to apply your makeup on the move) and they require a variety of applicators, and are rarely packaged together for on-the-go use!

Which brings me onto the reason for today’s post …” Enter “Laura Mercier’s Flawless Face Book Portable Complexion Palette, which is the size of one and a half iPhones.  The magnet closure snaps open to reveal a large mirror, five types of makeup, and two applicators.  Two dense, yellow-toned “secret camouflage” concealers work well for dark circles, while a goopier “secret concealer” hides blemishes. The tinted moisturizer is solid (in the upper left of the palette, above) and is portioned generously enough to use some extra as a sheer foundation. It’s silky to the touch and is applied easily with a finger.  Finally, a pressed powder in the upper right comes packed with a sponge applicator to dust and blend the look” NYMag.com

Laura Mercier

… so are you interested?  Sounds ideal – right!?  I can say that it is a lovely compaq too and it meets a whole load of on the go requirements

On my way into work or touch ups for a night out after a long day of filming, this paltte is exacly what I need for a quick fix.  It’s compact, spill-proof and has a mirror!!!!!  Your makeup bus rides will never be so simple :)

Best Makeup for Glasses

How to look sexy in glasses!

With Valentines Day fast approaching I’ll be giving you all a helping hand to decide what Makeup you want to choose for your special night :)  Check out my post this morning where I introduced the idea of choosing with LIPS or LASHES to emphasize

Or maybe you want to dress up for your special night?  Or maybe you want to look sexy and need to wear your specs but because you can’t see without them (I need to wear mine!!) you’re worried that they might “ruin” your sexy look  … because they are the real deal …doesn’t mean that you can’t look SMOKING HOT in them…  but maybe you’re not sure how to make your eyes look sexy in them?  DONT WORRY!

Do you remember my post last year which told you how to look sexy in your glasses and which makeup you should choose whether you are Short sighted or Long sighted?

Why don’t you refresh your memory

READ ON

I’ve got a little tip for you all who might wear glasses … Do you wear glasses?

I’ll combine some tips from celeb makeup artist Armand Beasley and show you how to

work with your framed face! What glasses do you wear?If you are short-sighted then your lenses will make your eyes look smaller and if you are long-sighted then your lenses will magnify your eyes, so here are some tips to help you to adjust your makeup to get the best from your specks!

Short-sighted – glasses make your eyes look smaller

To compensate for the lenses making your eyes look smaller, you will have to focus on applying your makeup to make your eyes look bigger! Focus on using a single colour across your lids so there is a single point of focus behind your lenses. Make sure you get a strong depth of colour and make sure that you blend the edges to soften the eye shadow line. Use some white or cream eyeliner on the inside of your eye along your waterline which will make your eyes look bigger and brighter!

Using liquid eyeliner, create a sleek line emphasising the natural shape of your eye and flick it at the outer edge to extend the length of your eye. Make sure you start narrow at your inner lashes then go wider at the outer edge.

Before you apply your mascara, curl your lashes to make your eyes look wider. Mascara is an important part in making your eyes look wider but be careful to use a mascara which won’t build your lashes too much…. Have you ever put too much mascara on your lashes so they constantly hit the lenses every time you blink? How annoying is that?!

Long-sighted – works to Magnify your eyes!

Because the lenses will make your eyes look bigger, you can get away with darker shades on your lids and a dark liner along the inside of your waterline.

When you apply your mascara, take care not to clump it, as your lenses will magnify the clumps! After you apply it, wipe your mascara wand clean and use it to brush through your lashes to help you separate them out.

Think about the rest of your makeup now… because you have darker eyes, go lighter on your cheeks and lips and opt for a more neutral tone for a girlie ultra-feminine look

See the TRANSFORMATION!

“Hot Tip Tuesday” by Make Up Like A Pro

How long does your Makeup last?

Did you enjoy your hot tip last tuesday? Click here to remind yourself!

Ok, so do you guys know that you shouldn’t keep your makeup forever? Or do you think that if it’s kept in a cool dry place and kept closed then you might be able to keep it forever!?  Well, here’s some news for you… let Make Up Like A Pro tell you that makeup expires and it might be sooner than you think or sooner than you’d like! J  As soon as you break the seal on your makeup, the bacteria begins to grow

You have to use your own judgement because makeup companies are not required to post expiration warnings on their labels and you should also be aware of the guidelines that experts recommend

By keeping your makeup cool means that you give the preservatives that help to fight off bacteria, more of a chance to stay intact so that will help your makeup stay fresher for longer

NEVER re-use your makeup after an eye infection as the bacteria will spread and infect anything else that it comes into contact with. That’s another reason to clean your brushes regularly (I clean mine after EVERY use when I’m working).  And if your makeup starts to smell or looks like it changes colour, then get rid of it!

Here’s a guideline indicating the approximate length of time that you should keep each piece of makeup in your makeup bag:

Mascara approximately 3 months
Makeup sponges should be washed after every use and thrown away after 1 month
Oil free foundation approximately 1 year
Cream foundation approximately 1 year
Concealer approximately 12-18 months
Powder approximately 18 months
Blush and Bronzer approximately 18 months
Cream blusher approximately12-18 months
Eyeshadow approximately18 months
Eyeliner approximately 18 months
Liquid eyeliner approximately 6 months
Lipstick and Lipgloss approximately 18 months
Lipliner approximately 1 year
Nail polish approximately 2-3 years

Friday Fever’s End of the week Makeup… HELP! by Make Up Like A Pro

Good morning everybody

So it’s Friday … AT LAST! How are you feeling? Have you had a good week?

I’m not sure about you all but I’ve had a long week this week filming and I’ve been up before 5am each morning and in bed around 11pm so my skin is looking a little tired by this point in the week!  That’s why good makeup and skincare is an essential part of my daily regime

This is what I have been rocking out at 5am each morning !!

Friday HELP!

I needed a little bit of help to put that sparkle back into my eyes… I needed some makeup magic to give me the sparkle … And only took under 3 minutes to do all this …

I patted some MAC cream blush into the apples of my cheeks, dotted some of my trusted and favoured product, Touché Éclat, under my eyes and around the edge of my nose, put my L’oreal million dollar lash mascara on, cleaned up any smudges (it was 5am so the clean up was more than usual!!) and chucked some lip gloss on with a coral hue … When the sun eventually came up, the colour looked looked HOT in the light!I’ve pretty much been doing that every day this week :)

Thanksgiving THURSDAY Make Up Like A Pro Style

Give THANKS this Thanksgiving for ALL DAY Makeup and do it Like A Pro!

For all of you guys that are celebrating Thanksgiving today, you’ll be busy running around cooking in a hot kitchen, cleaning the house… Generally running around like crazy, right?
So your face will be doing that marathon with you! This article gives you some great product ideas that will ensure that your makeup stays put all day with a minimum amount of touch ups throughout your day so you’ll remain picture perfect in every way
Apply a primer before you put your foundation on. This will not only help your makeup stay on longer but it will help your makeup go on more smoothly too.  Double bonus!  Using a primer is one of the key products when I’m doing someone’s makeup…
Mac prep and prime skin base visage is great
MAC Prep and Prime Skin Base Visage
Eyeshadow primers are a must have to stop that dreaded crease along your lids appearing as you get hotter!   They will keep your eyeshadow colour from disappearing and they will stop it from creasing.  It’s a superb  product
Pick a long wear foundation. Some are good for 14 hours! Take a look around and don’t be afraid to  ask the makeup counters for a tester so you can compare a few different ones. I use Yves Saint Laurent Teint Radiance and it’s stunning
YSL Teint Radiance
Apply your concealer with a brush as it will go on better and stay on better and make sure you set your foundation and concealer with a matte powder!
Have you tried using blotting papers before? They allow you to stay matte without the need to keep powdering, so you won’t get a build up of makeup throughout the day. They will rid your face of any extra oil without budging your makeup
Try out a some cream eyeshadow and blend it into your crease and socket line and use a water-resistant eyeliner. This will keep your eyes looking freshly lined and so will give the illusion of a fresh-recently-applied makeup!
For lips that just keep on going, line your lips with a lip liner first and then colour in your entire lip with your liner. Then apply your lippie which you will now find will stick firmly on top!
If you follow these priceless recommendations you’ll be well on your way to keeping fresh-faced all day

So now it’s Tuesday and that means Make Up Like A Pro’s TIP TUESDAY!

Today’s tip is about LIPS …

… And it is as simple as this …

“When you are creating your statement lip, try doing your makeup in this order … foundation, concealer, eye brightener, your chosen statement lip colour, eyes then cheeks… By doing it in this order, you are ensuring that you will coordinate your other makeup around your lips and won’t run the risk of looking OTT”
